When you are told to do something and have no personal stake in it, you will normally only do so much.

We are quite clever and quickly figure out how much we have to do to just get by, and that's what we do.

But when we have a personal stake in a project, everything changes.

You care.

When you care about something it shows, personally you feel it, and other people notice.

If you want to be successful, create things that other people can also have ownership of.
